Troup Knighted After Supplying Confidential Tax Information

Edward Troup who signed an agreement to provide confidential tax information to the compilers of the honours list was knighted several months later after supplying that information.

How ironic!

I thought that tax information held by HMRC was meant to be confidential???

HMRC Blocks Honours For Tax Avoiders

It would seem that HMRC is sticking its unwelcome nose into the honour system.

Tax avoiders face being shunned for honours such as knighthoods, as HMRC has been alerting the Cabinet Office to individuals involved in controversial tax schemes, with a memorandum of understanding obtained by the Times saying “poor tax behaviour is not consistent with the award of an honour”.

A document published on the Gov.uk website said the vetting process sees HMRC assign a low, medium or high risk rating to prospective nominees “to minimise the risk that prospective candidates have behaved in ways likely to bring the system into disrepute”.

The report said medium risk includes those whose tax affairs would be “likely to cause adverse comment”, such as “participating in one or more avoidance schemes”.

Now have I got this right, HMRC and the government are blocking honours for people who use legal tax avoidance schemes; yet happily dole out honours to the likes of Jimmy Savile, Fred Goodwin, Philip Green, HMRC's very own Lin Homer etc?

The rationale being that tax avoiders who are honoured would bring the system into disrepute, unlike Sir Jimmy Savile etc???

CCH reports that five members of HMRC have been awarded honours in the Queen's birthday hours:

"Five HMRC staff have picked up honours including Janet Mary Aiston, director in the wealthy and mid-sized business compliance unit at HMRC, who has been named a Companion of the Order of the Bath for services to taxpayers and tax collection.

Also at HMRC, Euan Stewart is made a CBE, for services to protecting tax revenue as head of intelligence at HMRC. John Archbold, programme manager in Liverpool, is made OBE for services to digital innovation and the community in Merseyside and David Stewart, a business unit head, has been awarded an OBE for services to the promotion of investment in Northern Ireland. Sean Connolly, an HMRC intelligence analyst, has been made MBE for services to innovation and tackling organised crime."
