All Animals Are Equal, But Some Animals Are More Equal Than Others

The Times reports that HMRC has admitted for the first time that it allows the most powerful members of society to escape prosecution for financial crimes.

At an economic crime conference in Cambridge last week, a senior government official admitted that HMRC accommodated celebrities’ concerns and settled debts privately to avoid the embarrassment of a public trial.

HMRC, however, continues to prosecute smugglers, small businesses and benefits cheats.

Richard Las, the deputy director of HMRC in charge of organised crime, said that “very wealthy and prominent members of the community” were afraid of the “reputational damage” that a criminal trial would bring.

As ever it is the low hanging fruit (eg SME's, "ordinary" people etc) that HMRC target.

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. Absolutely disgusting. In order for the law to be respected it must be applied equally. What the hell is wrong with these decision makers at HMRC because they live by a different moral code to normal people. They persecute the 'little people' but let the powerful off the hook.

  2. An MP recently asked what was being done to help thousands of people who may be SUICIDAL due to facing a 20-year retrospective tax law and the answer came back that they could call HMRC (9-5 Mon-Fri). Someone tried and the advice was that they need told to pay up. They are not human.

  3. Time for a bit of 'Spin' then I think. Let's get this delightful chap on the case shall we. There aren't any specific qualifications as such, but we will pay you a pile of dosh for running the Ministry of Truth. Now then Now then guys and gals, what competencies do you need for the position? Substantial ones I reckon. Well, how about, and I quote "Now I've worked in the charity sector, for the NSPCC under OPERATION YEWTREE". And we all know who was investigated as part of that don't we and their vile crimes. Than, as if by some miracle, dropped into a non job at the shit show. Draw your own conclusions, I know I have.

    1. Typing error. "And I've worked in the charity sector, for the NSPCC during Operation Yewtree. I'm glad I got all that experience under my belt before facing the challenges we have here". Pay attention to the last line of the article "Anything where you need to use communications as a tool to convince people of a point of view."

  4. Busy weekend. I guess they are too busy topping their tans up on the Alicante smash it to Benidorm than winning a tax tribunal. As we all know, they can just do what they want. Doesn't mean I can't make a show of them whenever I feel like it. Its fun.

  5. On World Suicide Prevention Day, from twitter @HMRCVictim #LoanChargeCostsLives

    Replying to @theresa_may:
"I interact with people on a weekly basis who are feeling suicidal due to the 20-year retrospective #2019LoanCharge. I know professional tax advisors who deal with calls daily. @StephenLloydEBN asked in parliament if the government will listen to demands to set up a 24hr hotline."

Hang your heads in shame, unrighteous HMRC senior management.

  6. From the HMRC website;

"We want to give you a service that is even-handed, accurate and based on mutual trust and respect."

Yeah, good luck with that then!

    2. So there is Jon Thompson: the straight-talker you need in a time of obfuscation. A man who has dedicated years to good financial management in the public sector and is now tasked with the unenviable task of helping the government deal with the impacts of EU exit on the UK’s border – and collecting the billions of pounds that might otherwise be lost to the UK through fraud or tax evasion. And training the civil service. The next time you think about griping over HMRC, consider that.
Utter bollox Jon...you are captain of the Titanic, you buffon !!
