HMRC Told To Practise What it Preaches

 

Members of a House of Lords committee have called on HMRC to “constantly review” the business practices of its contractors after it emerged that 15 were known to have used a controversial tax-avoidance measure the department is cracking down on.

Lord Bridges of Headley said that HMRC needed to practise what it preached following a session of the upper chamber’s Economic Affairs Finance Bill Sub-Committee that heard HMRC knew people who worked for it had used so-called disguised remuneration schemes. 

HMRC, quoted by CSW, said that it had "never endorsed or participated in disguised remuneration tax avoidance schemes".

"It is possible for contractors to use disguised remuneration without the participation or knowledge of their engager.

"Whenever it is discovered that a contractor, providing services to HMRC or RCDTS, is currently using a disguised remuneration scheme, HMRC (acting as the engager of contingent workers) acts promptly to terminate the relevant engagements.

"We do not investigate these cases any differently to other cases of suspected disguised remuneration, we are even-handed and treat all taxpayers equally.

"We continue to warn people about the risks of using tax avoidance schemes and our advice remains true – if something looks too good to be true, it almost certainly is."

HMRC Delays SATR Fine Deadline By a Month

Don't Roll Over if You are Fined for a Late Tax Declaration

 

The 31 January self assessment deadline is almost upon us, if you miss that you will be fined.

The Express reports that UHY Hacker Young looked into HMRC's latest figures, and found HMRC cancelled over 60 percent of late payment penalties last year.

As a result of these findings, UHY Hacker Young urged taxpayers to appeal if they feel any fines levied against them were wrongly imposed.

In monetary terms, UHY Hacker Young revealed that of the £275million in penalties levied last year, £167million was later completely cancelled.

NB HMRC has confirmed that personal or business "pandemic-related" disruption may be a reasonable excuse for late filing of tax returns.

HMRC's Hopeless Helpline

 

Rebecca Cave is none too impressed with HMRC's help facilities for agents.

Tax agents are finding the HMRC agent helpline is not answering their questions and the HMRC twitter account doesn’t understand basic points.

She notes that if you do get through to one of the HMRC helplines, record what was said and by whom. 

This evidence could be vital should the issue ever get as far as the tax tribunal, so record and preserve the question and the answer in a form you can access in years to come.

MT Global Fined £23.8M for Money Laundering Non-Compliance

Accounting Web reports that MT Global Ltd has been issued with the largest ever fine (23.8M) for money laundering non-compliance by HMRC.

HMRC found the money transfer business had breached seven regulations between July 2017 and December 2019 including failures in risk assessments and associated record-keeping, policies, controls and procedures and fundamental customer due diligence measures.

HMRC To Publish Names of Employers using Furlough Scheme

BREAKING: To combat fraud, HMRC will publish the names of employers using the furlough scheme on 26 January. From Feb, the value of claims for limited companies will also be published & employees will be told if claims have been made for them.

Swedes Like Paying Taxes

Sweden is infamous for having some of the highest taxes in the world, and yet the country's tax agency is still one of Sweden's most trusted institutions.
