The formation of a coalition government, one party of which is wedded to the idea of a moral crusade against tax avoidance, coupled with the fact that Britain is broke indicates that instead of cutting back on the powers granted by the last administration to HMRC there is a certainty that more powers will in fact be granted.
Accountancy Age quote Anne Redston, visiting professor at Kings College London:
"There are more powers on the way.
But we should really be putting a cap on powers for the next five years."
You have been warned.
Tax does have to be taxing.

In a way it is quite funny to think of HMRC getting more powers. Lets face it, they cannot cope with the work they already have.
ReplyDeleteYes, lets give more power to HMRC. They have demonstrated how truly responsible and capable they are and that they would never abuse such powers or become bullies!
ReplyDeleteBollocks to the rest of us.
HMRC should have been closed pending an investigation into how they lost millions of peoples private details, never mind giving them more power.
ReplyDeleteBrown and the clowns who suggested they merge customs and the Revenue just dont give a fuck.

ReplyDeleteThey didn't loose them, the sent them to the wrong people for safe keeping.
When the datagate crisis erupted we were all told to check our desks for discs and if any were found not to destroy them until the missing ones turned up ! They never have, and I suspect they are still at the bottom of bag in a TNT warehouse, as there is no evidence of the data have being used for fraudulent purposes, so to blame HMRC staff for the loss is somewhat unfair

ReplyDeleteSo did HMRC initiate a search of all the TNT depots? HMRC is charged with protecting our details not TNT.
Bullshit, the disks were never sent. The individual forgot to do it and said they had in order to avoid the consequences. Once the story exploded they were unable to admit the truth.
ReplyDeleteAnother problem with the draconian management style practised within HMRC.
