  1. Just like le Grande Dame Strathie, the witch Homer.
Its almost become pre requisite, retire from HMRC and a nice fat Knighthood or Damehood is a given.
Makes a complete mockery of the honours system, time to scrap it for Civil Servants, who expect it as part of their role.

  2. What a completely expected surprise; Sir Edward knows that everything is falling to pieces (and he's one of the major instigators). He hands in his notice and he's handed a knighthood for, er, services to taxpayers! What a blinking joke! Like many of those from HMRC who have been rewarded in the Honours List for things like 'projects' and 'analysis' they won't have any recent experience of helping taxpayers. In fact, Sir Edward is likely to have some past experience of helping tax evaders and tax avoiders! (don't bother spelling out the difference between avoidance and evasion - it'll create a massive yawn from me!) His dad was, like, an Admiral in the Navy (or something) so, of course, it's the Establishment welcoming in newer and younger members.

  4. @16.23 HMRC have that history to maintain. They have destroyed and continually wipe out the great history that both HMC&E and IR had before this ugly merging.

Wonder if one of the betting companies will give me odds on Jon Thompson getting a knighthood for his mismanagement when he leaves?

    1. Well Jon Thompson has turned a blind eye when confronted with serious allegations of bullying and law breaking, just like the Homer did.

She got her reward, he will do too. Completely immoral though and yes it undermines the honours system.
