How Very Odd!

My compliments to my chum Elaine Clark for identifying and pointing out this "oddity" wrt the death of a company sometimes killing off the corporation tax debt when there is a communications snafu between Companies House and HMRC.

Tax does have to be taxing.

Hanging On The Telephone

In August I noted that HMRC was changing its contact numbers for Corporation Tax enquiries.

Subsequently the ICAEW Tax Faculty asked for people's experiences of using the new numbers, here is a link to the comments received thusfar: Contacting HMRC.

This comment particulalry amused me:
"A very helpful tax officer told me not to waste time on the contact centre number. She gave me her fax number and told me to fax her requesting that she call me back."

Tax does have to be taxing.

Lord Myners Talks Bollocks

I see that Lord Myners is venting his spleen about tax avoidance and offshore tax havens.

He has accused multinational companies, such as Starbucks, of leeching tax revenue from Britain to tax havens abroad and attacked accountants for allowing it to happen.

He is quoted in the Telegraph:
"Corporation tax for an MNC (multinational company) operating in the UK is close to being a voluntary payment. The problem is that the tax environment many MNCs are interested in is a zero tax environment."
He suggests that a sales tax be imposed.

Don't we already have that in the guise of VAT?

As "interesting" and "stimulating" as Myners's views may be, I find them to be a tad hypocritical given that during the "halcyon" days of the Broone administration Myners was Financial Services Secretary to HMT (2008-2010). I would have thought that if he were so vexed about corporation tax avoidance then he would have said something, and indeed done something, when he had the opportunity.

Oh, and oddly enough, I see that he was chairman of Aspen Insurance Holdings for 5 years, a Bermuda-based insurance company, that managed to avoid more than £100M a year in tax. On top of that Myners was also chairman of Liberty Ermitage, an offshore fund based in Jersey. For good measure, Gartmore, the fund management company that Lord Myners chaired for 15 years, also ran a Jersey-based offshore business.

The word hypocrite springs to mind!

Tax does have to be taxing.

Contacting HMRC - Corporation Tax Number Changes

As per the HMRC website, HMRC is changing its contact numbers for Corporation Tax enquiries.

Here is the announcement in full (all clear?):

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is changing the way Corporation Tax customers contact HMRC by phone - to bring them into line with other HMRC customers. From 17 September 2012, most calls about Corporation Tax will be routed to one of two contact centres - based in Cardiff and Glasgow - through a new number.

If you or your clients are dealt with by one of the Corporation Tax operational offices listed below, your calls will be handled by the dedicated contact centre teams.

If your enquiry cannot be dealt with at this first point of contact, it will be referred to and dealt with by a dedicated operations team, who will contact you where necessary.

Please note: the number you need to call will not change if your enquiry is being dealt with by a specialist team, for example for the Large Business Service.

The existing telephone numbers for each Corporation Tax Office will transfer as follows:
