Leaky HMRC

 

inews reports that HMRC is to seek “clarification” from Boris Johnson on where the £58,000 to pay for the refurbishment of his Downing Street flat came from and whether it should have been declared.

A source from HMRC said that the Prime Minister would be “treated like any other taxpayer” as it seeks “clarification” on whether Mr Johnson derived any benefit in kind from any loans or donations for the refurbishment of No 11 Downing Street.

While the HMRC source made clear no formal investigation had been launched into the Prime Minister’s financial affairs, he added: 

“Things like this are declared by UK taxpayers all the time and it is the role of HMRC to clarify with people if these are subject to tax. The Prime Minister is no different to anyone else in this regard.”

The PM is indeed not different wrt tax matters. I would therefore query why HMRC is leaking details about what they are doing wrt his tax affairs, given that HMRC normally states that individual's tax affairs are confidential?

Hammond's Last Leaky Spring Budget

Tomorrow's Budget will be the last one to take place in the spring.

Spring Budgets will again become autumn ones (the first will be later this year), while the other big set piece event, the Autumn Statement, will become a spring one (the first will be in 2018). 

Yes folks, we will have another Budget this year!

As with recent budget's, Hammond's 2017 one has been leakier than the sieve that the Jumblies used.

Top tip in the media is that Hammond will raise taxes.

Paid Leaks

I see that senior HMRC press officer Jonathon Hall will be charged with allegedly leaking information on the 2010 Budget to The Sun.

When I was a nipper, breaking Budget Purdah was considered to be a flogging offence. Now, sadly, Budget details are leaked as often and in much the same way as the police leak details to the media of people arrested for alleged crimes.

According to economia, Hall and his partner, Marta Bukarewicz, will be charged along with The Sun's Whitehall editor Clodagh Hartley as part of Operation Elveden.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said that Hall and Hartley will be charged with conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office over alleged inappropriate payments.

It is alleged that between 30 March 2008 and 15 July 2011 The Sun paid £17,475 to Jonathan Hall, mostly via Marta Bukarewicz, in exchange for the unauthorised disclosure of information obtained as a result of his employment with HMRC.

According to the CPS statement, the information included government plans, unannounced spending and policy decisions relating to the 2010 Budget, plus the coalition government's deficit reduction plans.

Information also related specifically to policy and decision-making within HMRC, including that relating to job losses and casework.

HMRC have not provided a statement to economia.

I wonder if Hall declared these payments in his tax return?
