Playing Politics

Playing Politics
I see that Hartnett is playing politics, by coming out in support of the Christian Aid campaign to change international financial reporting rules.

Quote:

"There is a growing recognition that country-by-country reporting brings additional transparency, particularly in relation to how multinationals are operating in emerging and developing countries."

HMRC's leaders should keep out of politics, they may well end up getting their fingers burned.

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. Dear Dave,

Are you aware of point 14 of Civil Service Code?:

" You must not allow your personal political views to determine any advice you give or your actions."

  2. Hmm. If it's "playing politics" when the man who's responsible for HMRC's response to international tax avoidance says that there's "growing recognition" of the advantages of a particular way of responding to international tax avoidance, what is any civil servant actually allowed to comment on? Would the Chief Medical Officer be playing politics if he were to comment that there's growing evidence for the efficacy of a particular treatment.
