  1. Nice idea but fraught with danger. HM Treasury policy is that payments like this can be made but only by authorised special section and only exceptionally - following an upheld complaint, for example.

If a front-line staff member takes it upon themself to determine if a "sorry" is justified, and then it turns out there was no need because the taxpayer was in the wrong ultimately, then a whole can of worms opens up. I can imagine..."Well your honour, I was sent a bunch of flowers after I complained so they must have believed that complaint so I now want £1000s in compensation..etc etc"

It's why there is proper and measured scrutiny by very experienced officers especially wrt to complaints.

  2. Didn't think there were any very experienced officers left. All jumped ship what I can see and replaced with engagement firelighters. Yawn.

    1. Engagement firelighters ? I trump that with the new flavour of the month.....the alumni.. alluminati..whatever....aka the office brown nosers !! You couldn't make this crap up....these weasels deliver mandatory meeting like "success events" which force the staff to listen to how wonderful the HMRC is.....while all we want to do is the work we are paid for....total joke of a place.
