The 1p Tax Demand

A Sunday Times reader was sent the demand for £0.01 for the 2017-18 tax year by HM Revenue & Customs.

The cost of sending it by second-class post would normally be 61p, although HMRC probably paid a little less.

The reader was given the choice of paying automatically through his wage, salary or pension in equal instalments over 12 months from April next year.

SIGH!

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. At the other end of the scale:

FTT judgement worth reading in full.

The named HMRC staff did not appear as witnesses, probably just as well given the net result of all their fine work was held to be "unreasonable, even ludicrous".

Now seems that HMRC is in direct competition with the DWP to see who can force the greatest number of grotesquely stupid and wholly unjust decisions to the FTT rather than admit their processes, management and oversight of dispute management are wholly lacking (and deliberately) unfit for purpose.
