HMRC Can't Count

HMRC got its sums wrong on the number of individuals taking up a tax break for married couples and civil partners after it counted claimants more than once.

The FT reports that in June last year the Treasury claimed 3m couples were already using the marriage allowance, a tax break introduced in 2015 that lets non-taxpaying spouses transfer 10 per cent of their £12,500 tax-free personal allowance to their partner.

However, on Thursday HMRC admitted it had miscalculated the total to the tune of more than 1m. Its revisions found the real number of claimants was likely to be below 1.8m for the 2018-19 tax year.

HMRC had inflated the figures by counting the same claimant multiple times, as it included their backdated claims as well as those for the current tax year.
The original methodology was based on counting all the years for which applications were made.

This included unsuccessful claims and previous years claimed when individuals made backdated claims.

The new estimate of successful claimants does not include any estimate of backdated claims for that tax year."
Well done lads!

Tax does have to be taxing.

  2. Like the management claimed in Building Our Future, that ; "90% of our staff will go to the Regional Centres".

A couple of years into the programme this was qualified with ; " or end their careers with HMRC".

Totally different to the original claim and now put out as Gospel!

  5. Jon Thompson's mask has slipped.....he is currently being lambasted on the internal HMRC intranet...his latest gushing is about Smarter Working ie working from home....he is throwing this out as a perk for the staff when in reality it is becuase their BRILLIANT Building Our Future regional centres are in tatters.....senior management have fucked up again and woefully underestimated how many staff will fit into these monstrosities !!
His reply to one very well put argument from an experienced VAT officer was
"What a ridiculous comment".....this from the head of the HMRC...something has irked him.
To be honest fat boy Thompson has slimmed down...I would go as far as to say he doesn't look well.
I dread to think what will happen when he produces the pay offer.....HMRC communications might block the comments section that day.
Thompson....you are captain of the Titanic.....difference is you SAW the iceberg and did fuck all about it...imbecile.

  6. Another ship jumper Thompson !!
"Karen Wheeler resigns, director general of Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs Brexit border delivery group, was the lead official coordinating a cross-Whitehall response involving police, ports, customs and freight interests.

Her departure is being seen as a blow to the government and increasing the risk that the UK will not be as prepared for a possible no deal on 31 October.

“Nothing is happening in Whitehall now. Lots of people have been stood down on Brexit no-deal preparations and there is a general risk that people are just going to see this hiatus as an opportunity to clear off and go into the private sector,” said a source who knows Wheeler.

Jon Thompson, HMRC’s chief executive, said in a statement: “I would like to thank Karen for her outstanding work leading the Border Delivery Group to prepare the UK for EU exit and we wish her well for her retirement. We shall be announcing her successor in due course.”

  8. I predict that Thompson will be gone before the end of the year.

He has carried out most of the shit he was brought in to do.

He got his knight hood 6 months ago.

He was rumbled by the HMRC workforce after a year or so in post and now too many chickens are coming home to roost
