Secret Address - Follow Up

Secret Address
Last October I wrote about the problems that the post office were having recognising HMRC's new postcode (BX5 5AT) used for VAT returns.

Accountancy have followed this up, in their January edition, and note that that HMRC postcodes are not on the "postal address file because they are non geographic postcodes".

HMRC then went on to tell Accountancy that this is not a problem, and even if it was a problem "the responsibility lies with the post office".

So that's alright then!

Hopefully no one has been classified as "filing late", because of delays caused by this non geographic postcode.

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. The postcode BX5 5AT is not recognised by the system my company relies on but that could be because it hasn't been updated recently.
It is not even recognised by the PostOffices own website.

Do HMRC have the authority to make up there own postcodes now?

  2. Why not, they make up all the other rules as they go along.

We have just had a vat return posted back as they are still using the BX5 5AT postcode October 09, which is not recognised by Royal Mail. I asked whose fault this is and HMRC would not comment, but insisted that we could still be fined for a late payment, and would then have to appeal. Funny how it is always someone elses fault when it comes to HMRC - I guess they are incapable of admitting that they are wrong and have not sorted this problem out - and send the vat return envelopes with the BD98 1YY postcode which is the obvious solution.
