The Problem With Surveys

My thanks to a loyal "anonymous" reader (LAR), who draws my attention to the fact that the "leaders" of HMRC do not seem to want their staff to discuss the fact that HMRC came 103rd in the Civil Service People Survey 2010.

"But wouldn't it be awful if HMRC staff were banned from discussing this development?

Surely CaM, the internal comms people in HMRC wouldn't lock a thread on the staff forum boards soon after these results were known thereby denying HMRC's own people the chance to enter into some adult and honest debate?

No, that would surely never happen in an organisation that wanted to raise staff engagement...
"

As LAR says, how can an organisation that claims that it wants to improve staff engagement stop staff from engaging on this issue without being labelled hypocritical?

Fortunately, HMRC staff et al are more than welcome to engage with each other on this site.

Maybe I will receive an award from ExComm for promoting staff engagement?;)

  1. Ken,

I bet HMRC management would love to control the internet to prevent sites like this allowing ordinary members of staff who simply want to serve the public to the best of their ability debate and voice their views.
Something many probably cannot do inside without fear and threats.

    Well done.

  2. Even mentioning this site at work can lead to disciplinary action as it did in my case.

  5. Our local management have not released the detail for our centre, but amalgamated with other centre's due to some rejigging that happened last year.

But as to the results of the last people survey, they have not done a thing.

I believe the centre manager was genuinely surprised that results this year were worse than last year judging by the rambling message accompanying the results. Absolute loon.

    As the thread title asks

    "The Problem with Surveys?

I will answer thus. The management haven't a clue what the results mean!

  6. take it from me that this site IS blocked on any Dept computer that has t'internet access......
One look at the Dept propaganda sheet shows that the 'rose tinted - evrything is wonderful (and dont you forget it)' attitude is alive and well and exists in HMRC, so the lack of open and honest debate doesnt surprise anyone .....
