I Robot

As per a loyal reader, it appears that the robots are coming:
"The SMS text messages are only the beginning. I work for the twats called HMRC in the robotics team and they are planning on robots answering the calls to replace call centre staff jobs. Its already done on self serve time to pay and instalment arrangements, but the wider hmrc will have this roll out, oh and the fuck up that windows 10 is coming to hmrc."
This will end in tears!

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. Was thinking of applying for a job with hmrc at Croydon but after reading the employees comment with their opinion of their employer, not so sure now. Would anyone recommend hmrc as a place to work? Is it true about there being a nasty bullying culture? Is it a good honest place?

    1. Now just hold your horses a moment Pilgrim!
HMRC is managed by a bunch of psychopaths lacking in accountability or shame who "manage" a department despised by its staff and taxpayers generally.
Reports by PAC, mccounting professionals and bodies, various media sources, HMIC,etc. to name but a few, all illustrate the shame that is HMRC.
Be warned, read the book referrred to by 26/9 @12:45 or better still look up the mess that is Lean or Pacesetter that is currently leading the clowns by the nose.
You may soon begin to realise why they are referred to as The Muppets and sit consistently last or near last in many staff surveysundertaken over the years.
Your choice, still a free country (this week at least).

    2. HMRC is a truly awful place to work and has major difficulties with those who want to do real work. Sadly bullying is out of control and senior management are aware - do not be tricked by their anti-bullying & equality policies or their warm words about zero tolerance of bullying. The policies are not enforced, they pick & choice when to deal with conduct & discipline (they turn a blind eye to certain managers misconduct) and the warm words are just that, cold comfort should you fall victim.

  2. There are serious issues with bullying at HMRC, just read Margaret Hodge's new book "Called to Account" to give some idea as to the lengths the mob will go to. There is also no proper process for standing up to them. The HR Department cover it all up. The PCS Union have lots to say about all sorts of trivial left wing concerns but in practice are totally useless if actually trying to stand up to the mob.

    1. Just to demonstrate how out of touch they are with normal everyday concerns PCS Union appear to be big fans of John McDonnell & Jeremy Corbyn, enough said. Anyone applying to HMRC (or any other civil service department) should not waste their cash joining the ineffective & unsupportive union, who are more worried about alleged 'austerity' than individual members workplace bullying problems.

  3. HMRC management through their army of 200+ corporate communicators are excellent at one thing, generating bullshit. They are promoting inclusiveness at the same time as discarding hundreds of loyal staff who are unfortunate in that they live in the wrong place.

    1. The above comment is right - HMRC waste loads of the public's money on spin and promoting inclusiveness. They make a lot of noise about things such as equality, diversity, social mobility & zero tolerance of bullying; all laudable issues but you have to look at the substance of their actions. While managing their PR image to both internal (staff) and external audiences (tax payers/general public) they are simultaneously bullying people and making redundant skilled staff who have given years of dedicated service to the place who happen to live in one of the numerous locations the careerists at the tops have chosen to close (looks good on THEIR CV). The PR image is what they want you to believe i.e. that they are holier-than-thou, the real them is as seen by their actions, perfectly demonstrated by examples in Margaret Hodge's book.

    2. Judge HMRC by their ACTIONS. They have no morals and their warm words are not the reality.

    3. HMRC senior management have held 'away days' at the Emirates (Arsenal) and Stamford Bridge (Chelsea) in the last 6 months all at the same time as they are sacking staff and at the same as our tax money could be much better spent on properly funding the NHS rather than giving these overpaid people a lovely day out at our expense. Someone should ask them about it next time they visit offices. Looking after themselves, would you believe it... absolutely shameless.

    4. Hard-up taxpayers who simply do not have the money to pay their tax bill should not feel guilty when faced with HMRC's aggressive tactics, if HMRC have spare money to hold events at iconic venues they can certainly afford to wait for your tax money.

    5. Errm, just a minute, I smell a rat.
I remember Customs selling off their motel cum training centre at Wyboston, but what happened to Lawress Hall that former IR Countryclub Hotel then HMRC owned?!
Would be interesting for us, the 'Customers' to know the costings for these 'away days' - since we are paying for them!
C'mon, P.M., '...we are all in this together...' or something like that. Don't you think it about time that this bunch were to be brought to account.
And as for 200+ wonks in the Corporate Communications system? Perhaps feel sorry for them trying to push and sell the image/message/sound bite/mission statement/Lean sales/Pacesetter tripe.

    6. HMRC's Jon Thompson seems to go on a lot about social mobility, a laudable aim no doubt (though nothing to do with his real job as a tax collector) but how is this consistent with him and others at the top of the HMRC taking expensive 'away days' while staff often don't have the tools to their jobs?

AND while not picking up the phone to customers in a timely manner

AND all at a time while they are sacking hard working staff as part of their office closures

AND while ALLOWING an environment of bullying?

Social mobility for some, but clearly not for those who have worked hard for Revenue & Customs in the lower grades, hey Mr Thompson????

    7. While HMRC have numerous offices & regional centres around the UK, in addition to their large Lawress Hall training centre, available to hold large meetings it now seems they found spare cash 'down the back of the sofa' in these alleged austere times to pay for meetings at famous venues for the enjoyment of their senior, and very well paid, staff. Tax does indeed have to be taxing.

    8. Someone needs to put these HMRC 'away days' under thorough scrutiny, and robustly investigate whether such an expense (when they have numerous office venues they could use) is a proper use of public money.

  4. A Freedom of information request has been made for the costs of the senior management events at Arsenal and Chelsea.

  5. To 26/9 11.48:
I managed to escape a while ago and am eternally grateful that I was able to do so - in all honesty I wouldn't recommend HMRC as an employer to anyone unless I really detested them. The Coprporate Communications brown nosers happily publish endless self congratulatory bullshit on the Intranet site while staff doing the real work are bullied and stressed (God help 'em if they go sick!). I found consulting PCS to be a hopeless exercise - nice enough people but in my experience they are unable to help, especially when the really vile PMR system is involved.
