  1. So basically the Government is denying Members of Parliament access to tax experts when scrutinising bills? Democracy?

  2. "Treasury says no." Probably because there aren't any experts left. They have been replaced by drones who can only function by strict adherence to standard work instructions.

    1. Whatever are "standard work instructions"? Can anyone explain please? If applied to complex work it sounds like something which would only suit those who can't think for themselves and/or yes people. If being used in any business situation it would surely only lead to institutionally low performance and total chaos.

    3. in HMRC there Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Standard Work Instructions (SWI`s) hence SOP & SWI`s.
The worker bees have to follow SOP`s and SWI`s to the letter or there work gets marked down when quality checked.
No independent thought is allowed or common sense is allowed.

  3. Sorry, but isn't it the 'tax experts' from the big accountancy firms who have been effectively writing tax laws for the last 20-odd years, and who have created so many loopholes for their corporate and individuals to exploit that the tax code is now not only over-complex but also skewed to favour corporations and 'high net worth' individuals?

    1. There certainly aren't many experts left at HMRC are there?

Didn't the 'geniuses' who 'run' the organisation decide to close most offices(becoming even more remote from the communities of taxpayers across the UK in the process), make redundant thousands of experienced staff at a great cost and then replace them with inexperienced people off the street and all at the time when Brexit and MTD was on the horizon?

      You couldn't make it up!!!

    2. Very true. Not a problem though, because the big accountancy firms are always there to lend a hand. For a fee. Win-win, eh?

    2. I have no doubt in my experience dealing with the HMRC tax help lines (where you ring them, they sound very unhappy in there jobs, they can't help at all, half-heartedly say they will look into you enquiry and you hear nothing further until forced to make a formal complaint)that they are by far the WORST ORGANISATION in the UK.They don't know the first thing bout customer service.

  5. Because HMRC is run (badly) as a business, and NOT the Public Service it actually is.
