HMRC Can Duck Off!

HMRC confirmed that real ducks posed for the photos, before being retired to a bird sanctuary in Oxfordshire.

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. Dad, dad, there's a man at the door with a bill.
Don't be silly son, it's probably a duck with a hat on.

What is the difference between the taxman and a duck?

  2. What happens if you don't complete a tax return?

Do HMRC raise a determination (estimate) before sending a Field Force Agent round eventually at some year in the future?

Given there are no longer any local offices and Field Force have about 2 officers per county - who tend to be totally inadequate and too timid to use the legal powers they have - what is the deterrent?

The best publicity would be for taxpayers to know if they don't render a return, and pay in full by the deadline, they will have a motivated debt collector at the door.

HMRC's Field Officers get paid £25K+ in addition to meal allowances. Costly and ineffective.

Perhaps it's about time the Government outsourced their debt collection to allow professional debt collectors to do the job - then they wouldn't have to waste time and energy on wasteful awareness campaigns.

  3. @ 21:17 I can take it you have never been a Field Force Officer because I have and I can tell you when I was I earned the AO max (approx £20k) and was discouraged from claiming the meal allowances I was entitled to as there wasnt money in the budget.
Also the workload is quite demanding and the customers didnt appreciate me turning up unannounced demanding money (surprising that isnt it ?).
And the reason that I didnt refer cases for bankruptcy or winding up is because of the limited budget available for these things.
@19:21 you have hit the nail on the head, the problem these DCA`s have is that they have no legal powers to pursue HMRC debts , they just harass people by letter and phone without success and then return the debts to HMRC as to difficult to collect.
