HMRC Going After NHS Staff

As per The Times social and health workers and IT contractors who face five-figure penalties for tax avoidance have submitted a petition to parliament demanding that the taxman halt action against them.

HMRC is seeking money owed by almost 100,000 contractors who used “disguised remuneration” and similar schemes going back to 1999 that involved avoiding national insurance or income tax. Some face bills of up to £900,000.

The contractors, most of whom work in IT or healthcare, claim that they were duped into believing that the schemes, which typically involve employers making payments to a trust that makes an interest-free “loan” to the contractor, were within the law.

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. As we all know, HMRC have no morals.

Off-topic but I wonder whether HMRC are ready for General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) coming into force later this week?

Given their long term failure to comply with the Data Protection Act I would have my doubts.

When I worked for HMRC, in a career spanning three decades, a manager, as part of her campaign of bullying, divulged extremely sensitive personal data about me to her boyfriend. The breach was clear, and despite initially trying to cover her tracks, with irrefutable evidence she belatedly admitted her malicious actions. However, although this is a criminal offence, she was not investigated or prosecuted even though HMRC, including the CEO, were aware of her misconduct.

Furthermore, this same individual created a retrospective documents to rewrite their history of bullying and failing to comply with other legislation, in an attempt to thwart any employment tribunal which would expose what had been going. This means HMRC hold data which is incorrect. As the DPA requires data to be accurate, I sent numerous communications to HMRC outlining the factually incorrect documents which had been cooked up by the law-breaking manager. Showing their utter contempt for the law, HMRC did not reply essentially refuse to amend the false data.

In another data lapse, HMRC sent me confidential data relating to a taxpayer when I made a SAR. I informed them of their error. They denied this was an error and said I was entitled to the data! Wrong.

They even sent data relating to the performance of a former colleague. Once again I informed them of their failure but showing all the hallmarks of the out of control organisation they are, they did not even reply.

If an HMRC manager is allowed to discuss confidential, sensitive personal information about an HMRC officer with their boyfriend in the full knowledge of the CEO and HR, how on earth can taxpayers have any trust that HMRC will not disclose taxpayer data to third parties? It is a corrupt culture.

Get the authorities into HMRC to clean up the culture of casual misconduct and for goodness sake do not trust HMRC with your personal data.

  2. If HMRC didn't spend so much time bullying their own staff, and if they didn't spend so much time covering up the bullying of their own staff, they would have a lot more time to do real work.

The culture goes to the very top and is beyond change. Hence why they employ so many in the 'cover up unit' otherwise known as HR.
