It's Only Money!

MoneyUHY Hacker Young have revealed that HMRC managed to collect £238M too much tax from taxpayers in the tax year 2009-10, as a result of PAYE errors, an increase of 148% from the previous year.

This increase seemingly is due to errors and glitches in the new HMRC system, which was designed to make PAYE processing faster and more accurate.

The Independent quotes an HMRC spokesman:

"Over and underpayments have long been a feature of the PAYE system. But our contact centres are able to correct inaccuracies, in part because of the new system."

The new system has caused more problems, but the new system is able to correct the problems that it is causing.

So that's alright then!

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. Sounds good, the new system caused problems but it lets advisors correct the problems.

Now if you could just get through to an advisor!!!!!!

  2. I must have missed something, I thought the new PAYE system was working as designed.

  3. Fair enough, this is obviously not good and needs sorting ASAP. Hope all the overpayments will be made quickly (before the next world cup counts as quickly)

But how much money does HMRC not collect through continuous non-payment / evasion / duplicitouos measures? (Please note I am not saying avoidance - anything legal is fair enough)

Remember, paying tax is the price of wanting to live in a civilised society.

Ken, when are you going to do any investigation work into the people and companies who are scamming the country out of billions?

  6. I wonder why we've just been told to write off all PAYE underpayments of less than £300 a year, then?
