Here Comes The Judge

The Telegraph reports that next week the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will accuse HMRC of failing the public, through systematic management errors that may have cost taxpayers £5BN.

Sir Andrew Park, a former High Court judge, will investigate HMRC agreements made with a number of companies including Vodafone and Goldman Sachs (the vampire squid).

The National Audit Office (NAO) has been asked by MPs to carry out an investigation beyond its usual remit to examine up to 10 specific deals approved by HMRC, Sir Andrew will lead the investigation.

The PAC report will heavily criticise David "Jack" Hartnett.

How very "civil service" that his departure from HMRC was announced/arranged prior to the publication of the report!

  2. The PAC is taking this seriously and NAO have suddenly grown some balls?

    I must be dreaming.

Best not let Uncle Dave and Auntie George know about this otherwise they might step in to save their nieces and nephews in corporate crony clownland.

  4. Could disciplinary action ie being stripped of his pension still be taken against jack if this PAC found gross negligence on his part or is he conveniently untouchable???

Well he's still here until next summer. Stranger things have happened although I don't hold my breath.

  8. I may be wrong but I thought it had been intimated that he could have retired a while ago.

So I guess if he needs to jump quicker he can do.

  10. I bet Jaek would take the HMRC 5th i.e. he would hide behind the usual bollocks of not being able to discuss individual cases. The whole thing will be blamed on the staff and the guilty parties will all walk away pensions and golden handshakes in tact.

When the MOJ hears tax tribunals, there isn't all this BS about taxpayer confidentiality. The decisions are posted up on the tribunals service website.

The only difference here is that a settlement was reached before it became public.

I really don't think the PAC hearing will go anywhere. Dave should be treated the same as any other civil servant in the same situation, suspended, investigated and eventually dismissed.

  12. HMRC – "We collected a record £468 billion in taxes last year"

NAO – "HMRC collected £469 billion in revenue."

taxes, revenue, what's the difference... just the odd billion between friends (who cares).

And in case you can't work it out, £469 billion minus £468 billion = £1billion.

    Statistics, statistics and damn lies.
