HMRC's 17,000 Erroneous Final Reminders
AccountingWEB reports that HMRC has sent out 17,000 final reminder letters (SA359 Payment Reminders) for Self Assessment payment in error.
An HMRC Working Together co-ordinator, in the spirit of Donald Rumsfeld, confirmed that this was a "known issue".
I wonder how many "known unknowns" there are floating around in HMRC?
Seemingly there was a delay in updating HMRC's records:
“This problem has arisen because payments received on the 14 to 16th December, although credited to the correct customer accounts, were not allocated to outstanding charges until after the reminders had been selected for issue.”
Little wonder then that HMRC have put their SME business record checks on hiatus, given that their own record keeping appears to be a tad iffy.
HMRC has apologised for the error, and has cancelled the penalties.
Tax does have to be taxing.

Strange that no HMRC people have yet leapt in to defend their wretched employer. Stranger still, however, that any of them at all are prepared to defend the bunch of bastards that are crapping on them from a great height.
ReplyDeleteYou won't catch me defending these shitebags.
DeleteThey would have just received their payslips so all they will be thinking about is their pension contributions.
