The Reality of HMRC's Needs Enhanced Services

My thanks to a loyal reader who posted a brief outline of how HMRC's face to face meetings (aka Needs Enhanced Services) for elderly/infirm taxpayers actually work in reality.

It seems to be a very hit or miss affair, with the hapless taxpayer left standing around until someone spots him/her:
"Needs Enhanced Services.

It works like this: Tax payer outside in the cold until a member of staff exiting or entering the building spots them, usually it's not too long before a smoker goes in or out.

Staff member then has to decide if they meet NES ie are elderly or infirm.

Staff member then has to leave t/p outside and go upstairs to grab one of the staff members seeing NES customers, they then come down and take the t/p into a private room."
This appears to be a very haphazard and amateurish way to treat people, especially given that they are elderly/infirm.

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. What do you honestl;y expect with the closure of the Enquiry Centres.

HMRC don't give a flying fuck about customer service.

    Simples.

  2. But homer and co say its going so well??!!! what they mean is its great we've got rid of loads of staff, shut some offices and saved loads of cash. Probably to go towards her over inflated 'deserved' bonus.
Management and indeed the tory govt have forgot the reason they are there- to help & serve the public. The public are seen as an inconvenience. What customer service we give!!

  3. Of course the service provided at local offices is not important, as the bosses assure us that most of the public know the enquiry centres are closed and rarely turn up outside. They seem totally unaware of the fact that several people are still turning up at the offices every weekday, unable to gain access, sometimes travelling a long way on public transport and it is often older tax payers.

  4. HMRC is NOT a "for profit" business, but a Public Service. Unless they think cutting services=profit and public service=not serving the public interest, in which case they have excelled.
