HMRC Chaos

As per the Independent:
"Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has been forced to apologise for “shocking” customer service that has hit small businesses struggling to complete their tax forms.
A parliamentary answer to Richard Burden, the Labour MP for Birmingham Northfield, showed that barely one-third of telephone calls made to HMRC contact centres were handled within five minutes in the second quarter of the last financial year, and only 40.3 per cent between April and June 2014."
Sigh!

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. And we all know Lin Homer and Ruth Owen's mantra "We are putting more staff onto the telephones, we now answer 80%+ calls annually, it is peak periods when we have a large number of calls blah blah blah, we apologise for this but will be recruiting xx number of staff for the tax credit period etc etc blah blah blah." Enquiry Centres what are those things? there the empty buildings not been touched for a year with the broken windows that once helped thousands of people a year...look at them now.

    1. Yes the enquiry centres closed, however they were replaced by the NES service. Which is currently celebrating its first birthday, they dealt with 65000 taxpayers.

    2. EC's dealt with over 250,000 people every year what happened to the rest?

    3. I'd imagine they're in the queue like everyone else, NES "customers" appear to receive the service all taxpayers got about a decade ago

  2. With £80 million of additional cuts to find methinks things are unlikely to improve

  3. Not sure why HMRC had to apologise... After all its government imposed cuts that have led to this sad state.of affairs

    1. Nothing to do with government cuts Labour merged the departments in 2005 and made thousands redundant in 2009.

    2. Yes under a labour government the headcount reduced from around 105000 to 88000, under conservative government rule it has reduced even further to around 65000. So has everything to do with government cuts of both persuasions!

  4. I see HMRC are no getting it the neck because of problems with claiming the new Marriage Allowance

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/11656456/Thousands-miss-out-on-marriage-tax-breaks-due-to-confusing-computer-system.html

For once the useless rabble in charge to HMRC are not entirely to blame since the Verify system being applied by GOV.UK is part of a government wide gateway built by Experian amongst others and is not actually run by Homers mob or the Revenues regular IT suppliers. You do have to wonder what bright spark came up with a system that assumed everyone in the UK has internet access, a passport, a driving license, a mortgage and a credit card. Even more bizarre when you consider that most of those claiming the allowance are going to be low paid or elderly and therefore not likely to be in possession of these items

    1. Oh and I forgot to add a mobile phone with which to get a text containing the security code. These are naturally things every over 75 year old possesses

    2. Anyone who registers online but cannot get through the verify system can make a claim by phone, anyone unable to use the Internet will be able to make a claim by phone... Probably sometime after the end of July, this will be back dated to April

  6. All the Daily Wail etc have to do is attend one of the nationwide series of jollies (sorry - Building our Future) events at prestige venues to see how good things are in reality. Eg at the Emirates on the 25th of June.
