Fake HMRC Phone Numbers

Be warned, there are some scummy people who have set up fake HMRC phone lines that aim to make a profit on connecting the hapless caller to a real HMRC phone line.

As per Low Incomes Tax Reform Group:
"We have recently noticed an 0844 ‘HMRC helpline’ number being advertised on the internet, which is not a real HMRC helpline number. Calling it will get you through to HMRC – but possibly at an inflated price. We urge caution for anyone searching for HMRC numbers online and recommend once again that the Government consider introducing a kitemark to identify genuine Government websites and numbers."
It's bad enough ringing the right number, without having some scumbag putting himself in the middle and trying to make money out of a phone call.

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. That explains something. A while ago on hmrc's twitter, a "customer" tweeted a screenshot of their phone screen showing them having been queuing on sa helpline for 45 minutes. The number they had called started with 0844.
