HMRC Too Busy To Chase Evasion

The Office for Budget Responsibility said the measures to collect tax from tax evaders who use tax havens such as Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man would raise just £270 million, rather than the £1.05 billion which had been trumpeted (a £780 million shortfall).

The OBR is quoted by the Mail:
HMRC is less optimistic about how much of the lost yield can be recouped through additional compliance activity, on the basis that they are unlikely to be able to work the higher number of additional cases on top of existing workloads.
As ever HMRC will focus on the low hanging fruit.

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. Is it right that HMRC has a £200,000.00 bill arriving shortly for a botched investigation?

  2. Well all those high profile prosecutions worked well didn't they? Low profile prosecutions? Any prosecutions at all? This was blatant tax evasion. Of course you have to be rich to evade tax, that means you get a get out of gaol card in this country. Not one MP, Lord, or other high profile crook on their list? Oh for a whistle blower but of course we all know how they treated the last one!

  3. OBR wants to focus on HMRC NOT dropping cases they WILL lose, they think the answer is to give it to CPS to carry the blame when its thrown out of court.
CPS look like pricks, and get a hefty bill.... and HMRC walk away. poor old tax payer..... Are HMRC good for anything ?

  4. Understand that HMRC do not bring criminal charges like they used to be able to do-this decision is made at the CPS, based on the evidence put to them..

  5. yes I know, in this case the HMRC pass it to CPS after running up the costs and compensation bill, basically they think they've got a case but are too blinkered to see what is and isn't there. CPS are duped into taking it on based on the flawed 'evidence' quoted by lowly HMRC staff after their superiors blindly accept 'the evidence' without carrying out a due diligence audit of the facts, to confirm the actual evidence, and the lack of evidence that I talk about. I underestimated HMRCs stupidity and their ability to 'side shift' the blame for the bill that they will be getting for this attempted prosecution.
    I will keep you informed.

  6. they gave me a bill , 'due immediately' 'no reminder will be sent' for alleged tax owed. funny how when you tell them to fuck off and prove the liability and ownership of the alleged debt, they fuck off! been 4 Months now, still waiting guys.
this department is out of control and think that they answer to no one........ someone's got to sort these idiots out.

  7. HMRC is systematically making all the trained experienced inspectors redundant and replacing a fraction of them with school leavers on cheaper contracts. They are given basic training and a set of standard working instructions which they must follow to the letter. No discretion, , no judgement, no tolerance,no common sense.

  8. well that makes it alright then! the tax payer will be paying very dearly for the penny pinching, lack of training, lack of common sense, lack of professionalism and down right refusal to see it as it is. In excess of £200,000.00 now, and I guarantee HMRC will be paying up.
Sorry tax payer, but they were given numerous opportunities to walk away.

  9. Is it a criminal prosecution or civil? Big difference between the two-and what with the onus on "proof" and not "probability" I would think it is a civil case.

    1. Criminal which take precedence over the threatened civil, they will lose the criminal and the civil will be where they really get a bloody nose and costs / compo
