  1. George Osborne did a fantastic job turning the economy around during the last 6 years and deserves great credit. A shame to see him move on, but I am sure Philip Hammond is well qualified for his new role and will be a safe pairs of hands to take the UK through the Brexit period. Maybe he could consider outsourcing more of HMRC's work to the private sector, improving efficiency through competition and perhaps getting HMRC's senior management (who let down both their skilled & dedicated staff and the tax compliant public) to start raising their game.

    1. Gideon did a fantastic job?!
Time to put down the cracks pipe Mrs Osborne!!!

    2. in the longer term can see majority of hmrc's work being outsourced with only a small operation retained responsible for managing the outsourced contracts. The senior management have shown themselves incapable of running an efficient organisation and the work could be done better and cheaper outside (by businesses who allow people to get on with job rather than bullying them and making them attend endless pointless meetings to make management feel important). The disgusting way they treat experienced staff, who are then replaced by call centres on even lower wages and NO experience, would suggest they are already moving the cards around to prepare for such outsourcing. If only they could be honest with staff.

  2. If you want an economy with debt under control and opportunity for all you need a serious grown-up Chancellor in the job, like George Osborne and now Philip Hammond, to make the big and tough decisions. There is no alternative.

    1. hmm debt has increased by £555 billion under Gideon...http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/the-uk-national-debt-has-risen-by-555-billion-since-2010-under-george-osborne-a6947661.html

    2. hmmm but seen in the full context that he was left a note saying 'there is no money' when he took over in 2010 he has a solid record. Some predicted another recession - on the contrary the record was:- robust economic growth; investment in infrastructure, schools, hospitals, social care & overseas aid; over half a million start-up business created and record low unemployment.

    3. Robust economic growth, pull the other one...

    4. The UK is the fast growing economy in the G7. GDP has risen since 2010. Osborne had to take some tough decisions in the national interest to clear up the mess and make the UK open for business once again; clearly those decisions were not popular with everyone but at the end of the day the objective facts are objective facts and its difficult to see what the alternative was or is.

    1. Whats hilarious is anybody thinking Osborne was a good Chancellor...
If he was so good, why was he sacked!?

    2. The fact the new PM has decided to bring in her own new team at this point, in no way undermines Osborne's record for turning the economy around and it was that record which was a big part in the Conservatives winning a majority at the last election only a year ago.

    3. Ermm... Nothing to do with Cameron promising a referendum to stop voters defecting to UKIP

    4. Voters do consider a number of factors that is true, but a top priority for most is a strong, stable & growing economy as a foundation to a good & fair society, so the Osborne & Cameron record for economic competence would surely have been a major consideration. And at the end of the day while Corbyn's unelectable Labour squabble about what their rulebook says, the Tories just get on with the serious business of improving the country.

  4. You might find it hilarious but I note you do not suggest any alternatives.

    2. Osborne at first stabilised the economy and then it grew, enabling over 2 million new jobs to be created and allowed them to pursue their social justice agenda.

    3. Osborne & social justice...
Now you really are taking the piss!

  7. Osborne made many bold & brave economic decisions such as to cut the top rate of tax understanding the Laffer curve principle that increasing personal tax rates beyond a certain point is counterproductive and the results have proven him correct with more money to invest in public services and to help the least well off.

    1. The latter curve is bollocks! & the only people to benefit from Osborneomics were his wealthy chums!

  8. Errrm....is there something not socially just about creating jobs, enterprises and investing the public's hard earned tax money into improving public services and Universal Credit etc or I am missing something? How could that possibly happen if people like Corbyn & John McDonnell were given the chance (which they won't be) to ruin the economy??? Social justice = One Nation Conservatism.

    1. That would depend if the created jobs were more than NMW zero hour contract types & enterprises were more than benefit claimants coerced into self employment for fear of sanctions!
Universal credit is a cash cow for IT consultants, as for improved public services, where?
One Nation Conservatism = Masters & serfs!!
So kiss your gilt framed picture of George & put it back on the mantelpiece, & go back to getting your "facts" from the likes of the daily wail & torygraph!!

  9. When times are hard a job is a job. Each person who has moved from welfare to work now has the dignity of a wage packet. Blair should be praised for starting the process of a fairer settlement for working people with the NMW - good for businesses and employees - and thankfully we now have a National Living Wage - talked about for years and delivered by the Osborne & Cameron One Nation government.
