HMRC Clarifies The Year End Deadline Extension

In case you were confused by the recent announcement of a 2 day deadline extension by HMRC, HMRC have issued further clarification.

HMRC have emphasised that this is not actually an extension of the deadline, since this would have required legislation to implement an extension.

Instead HMRC is using its ‘collection and management’ powers, which allow it not to collect sums that are legally due if it would not be cost effective to do so.

In this case, people affected by not being able to contact HMRC with queries on 31 January, who then can’t file their returns, could appeal against the penalties on the grounds that they have a ‘reasonable excuse’ for being late so no penalty would be due in the end.

The cost of this exercise to HMRC would outweigh the penalties that might be due from the small number of people who might file late anyway on 1 and 2 February without a reasonable excuse for being late.

Everyone clear now?;)

  1. Ken,

And, err, should we take it that you agree that this is appropriate exercise of the Commissioners' duty of care and management?

    3. Sorry for not responding quicker Ken. I know you changed it a while back but it's been slow since the change; I just finallly have lost patience! I want to keep logging on. I used to log on several times a day but to be honest it's so slow now I can't face it. I am on BT broadband so it should be pretty rapid. It's moving to the comments which is the killer. It takes so much time to load the page. I know Nil about IT but there are lots of bells and whistles on here now and I am wondering if they are slowing it down. Have you sold out on us Ken and taken the advertising money at your readers' (time) expense? Nooo! I may have too start a page called HMRCISSHITEISSHITE.COM LOL
Anything you can do to speed it up would be much appreciated.

    4. Sorry folks, the new layout is being rolled out across Blogger. Were I not to change it I would probably have to move to another service provider.

I use Virgin broadband and use Firefox, the load speed for me is quick. I suspect the issue lies with your ISP and possibly your browser, rather than the layout.

  4. I doubt it's my ISP Ken as I've been logging onto your site from all over the place. I'll try Firefox and see how it goes.

  5. Much better Ken. Thanks. Maybe a quick post in case others are having similar issues. Keep up the good work. I see the French Supreme Court has ruled the HSBC stolen data cannot be used........

    1. You're very welcome:)

      Firefox made the difference yes?

I know that when I switched to Firefox last year my site access time greatly speeded up. There seems to be issue with IE 8 and 9 which cause problems for both browsing and on people's pcs.
