It seems that HMRC is so desperate to satisfy its political masters, and to ensure that its directors get their bonuses, that it has been trying to fine up to one million innocent people hundreds of pounds each for late tax returns.
The Telegraph reports that HMRC said that 963,000 taxpayers were found to be unnecessarily registered for self-assessment (SA) in the past two years and have now been taken out of the system altogether.
None of the taxpayers had put in SA tax returns for three years yet were still being chase for late filing penalties by HMRC’s inspectors.
The number of people affected represents one in 11 of the UK’s 11 million people who are registered to pay tax in this way every year.
Good work lads, keep it up!
Tax does have to be taxing.

This is another of their fundamentally dishonest tricks which is losing this failing tax collector respect and credibility across the country.
ReplyDeleteTax payers are getting more and more fed up with this 'service' from an incompetent bunch of bullies.
ReplyDeleteTrust pilot reviews of HMRC reveal 84% rate HMRC as bad, and 9% rate HMRC as poor. These figures must be more reliable than the customer surveys conducted by HMRC.
The HMRC staff surveys have been subjected to moving goalposts and scoring systems for some years.
ReplyDeleteHowever, despite "...The Piper Pays The Tune" scenario HMRC have been unable to obscure the reality reported by their workforce. Truth will always out and when you consider the threats made to close offices and also against staff by use of the performance management non-system, it is a surprise that they still score so abysmally against other public sector bodies.
Yet, until the general public/taxpayers/"customers" realise the true overall cost of this don't expect any change. Remember its not just the cost of sick leave and pathetic IT and building contracts that cost us so much.
So, its Friday, again, and nothing much has changed, The Muppets are singing to the same tunes!
