Every Cloud Has Silver Lining

The Telegraph reports that because of the threatened walk out by HMRC staff from call centres on 31 January, HMRC will waive the automatic £100 late fines for anyone whose return was delayed because they could not get through by phone to HMRC on the strike day.

Specifically HMRC said that anyone who was prevented from filing their return by the strike would not have to pay the automatic £100 late penalty, so long as they send a letter explaining their return was delayed because they could not get through.

  1. Er, you file online not over the phone. If you've lost your password etc, why the heck did you leave it to the last minute? Surprisingly most SA taxpayers submitted their returns way before Christmas, so leaving it to the last moment is never a wise idea!!

That famous 300 day walkout by HMRC staff.

What if you're a union member who is out on strike but is required to fill out a tax return, has no reason to phone HMRC on 31 January 2012, chooses to phone anyway, call shows up on phone bill?

The strike on 31/01 is confined to staff in Personal Tax Operations (processing, call centres and Face-to-Face). If you're not in that business stream, then you're not out that day.
