Eight Year Tax Credit Fraud

Bolanle Shote, a former HMRC employee, has been jailed for eight months for fraudulently claiming over £86,000 in tax credits.

Citywire reports that Shote, from Basildon, Essex, made multiple false claims for tax credits by saying that she was a single parent, when in reality she was a mother of three who had lived with her partner for around 10 years.

Shote was charged on 8 August 2014 and on 21 November 2014 she pleaded guilty to 10 offences of dishonestly claiming tax credits. She resigned from HMRC on 15 November 2013.

Sentencing Shote, His Honour Judge Graham said:
This was a fraud from the outset which continued for over eight years and this, together with the amount involved, means that I have no option but to impose an immediate custodial sentence.
Cheryl Turton, a senior manager at HMRC, said:
What makes this fraud even more despicable is that Shote was employed by HMRC and knew full well that lying about her personal circumstances was fraud.’

Tax does have to be taxing.

  2. So, jail for conduct which diddled the Treasury out of £86,000.
But meanwhile, a top accountancy job as a reward for conduct which diddled the Treasury out of over £1 billion.
