A Nice Little Earner

Whilst HMRC is set to get rid of automatic £100 fines for late submission of tax returns, the downside is that a points system is being considered whereby the more penalty points you clock up the higher the fine.

The fine could be as much as £2000.

Let us trust that HMRC don't make any mistakes when levying such fines.

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. Insist on the proof of guilt, insist on copies of all calculations, insist on proof of claim and pay nothing.
HMRC hasn't got much right since it started so I don't see it getting this right.

    1. Guilt is going to be shown on the basis of whether you have filed or not. What 'claim' does HMRC have to make? In future, virtually everything will be online. If you can't file one online and on time after nine months and after all the reminders, then you deserve the penalties.

    4. you my friend are missing the point, we have the choice what we do online, laws cannot dictate that we must do online reporting. what about the people (all be it few) that do not have access, and what about the many that simply don't trust the security of online and HMRC ?
over to you to answer these genuine concerns on behalf of HMRC. then sell it to the general population. good luck

  2. Actually, the simplest thing in the world is to make online reporting dictated by law. Ooops, it already is.
