Why Do You Evade Tax?

In a statement to The Mirror, HMRC confirmed it was seeking to interview both compliant and non-compliant people among Britain's 11,000 "High Net Worth customers."

HMRC said the research was part of an ongoing strategy to increase collection for the public and was focused on 'understanding the attitudes and behavioural triggers' of these people rather than gathering specific tax accounting intelligence.

Those asking the questions would be social researchers, not forensic accountants. Estimated cost of the survey up to £80K.

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. £80k is a tiny amount for HMRC. Each and every year I'd estimate that they spend substantially more than that in covering up law breaking, discrimination, misconduct, violence and general bullying which occurs within their workplaces.

We would all want to see tax evaders prosecuted. But the law must apply equally to everyone. If the law, criminal & civil, has been broken by HMRC staff, is there any good reason why they should escape punishment and go on to collect a taxpayer funded severance & pension for the disgrace they have caused to the Department?

HMRC need to absolutely demonstrate they abide the law. They are a law enforcement agency for goodness sake. If they don't abide the law, taxpayer might ask why should I. It makes a mockery of how democracy functions.

Let's restore some integrity to the badly tarnished HMRC and have an investigation to identify and deal with any offenders past and present.

  2. Would anyone other than an idiot willingly agree to be interviewed by HMRC about their financial affairs without just cause and professional representation? Past or present Members of Parliament being possible exceptions.
