HMRC's Staffing Brexit Boost


Civil Service World reports that HMRC is boosting the number of staff who will be based in its new regional hub in east London because of the department's increased Brexit-related workload.

HMRC signed a lease on new office space at Stratford at the end of 2017 with a view to basing 3,800 staff at the hub.

Thompson has now told staff that HMRC will take an additional three floors of the building and base 600 additional staff at Stratford, making it home to 4,400 full-time-equivalent workers.

So, if I understand this correctly, over the past few years HMRC has been making experienced staff redundant only now to start recruiting additional staff who have no experience?

Muddling its way through seems to be the HMRC modus operandi.

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. Staffed with disposable people on the promise of 'opportunities'. Lower pay, no progression pay, reduced terms and conditions and sick pay. They won't be there long enough to claim a pension.

HMRC places no value whatsoever on qualifications , with the result that the place is stuffed with dim people spouting management speak , a woman in charge of greater London with half a dozen O levels etc -the new recruits will have little to do with raising revenue in an organisation which actively penalises those who raise tax and inevitably come in to conflict with industry, i threw in the towel years ago and no regrets

    They would never explain why.

  6. My last few years saw the over emphasis of "management".

    There were fewer people doing the difficult and core revenue collection/ investigations and more and more layers of people checking this work.

    Having escaped the core function these aspiring managers were desperate to delegate as much work as possible and then criticise it.

    Such a contrast to the management style when I started. Whilst firm, they were fair and respected and generally supportive of the work and their staff.

    There are now far too many chiefs - who are insecure/ incompetent.

    HMRC is an organisation that is in a complete mess.

    1. Same here-i was doing more and more work as the new entrants (not allowed to call them newbies) did not have a training program ready for them. When I started 20 years ago, I came in knowing what my training would be, and when
      I was also under no illusion that if I did not make the grade, I would have to go. Now utterly incompetent people were being deemed good enough to do the job I did. I would not trust 95% of them to back me up

      I'm so glad that i retired, and can see no.future in the work.i did-no one senior had the bollocks to question what was going on, so I did

      I didn't make myself popular with many of them, and just got lie after lie as a response. I happily put these out to as many colleagues as I could so that others could challenge blatant lies.
      If you can afford to get out (and I was lucky that my finances allowed this), then get out now.

    2. Couldn't agree more. Emphasis was on "behaviours" and gathering evidence of these rather than bringing in tax. Happy to be out of it after 38 years.

Where i am based many are just waiting for the date we are to go to Stratford and getting ready to take our retirements, those who are near 60 are chomping at the bit, the place has nothing to offer, lie after lie regarding BOF, apprentices are staying to get trained up to get better paid jobs in the private sector when the time comes, or bribing them with fast tracked promotions to make it worth their while because they cant give them more than 1.5%. The place is imploding, god knows how we are going to cope come Brexit day, but still EXCOM fiddle while Rome burns.

      Awaiting the pay offer with baited breath.....rumours have it that managers have been summoned to events to ask their opinion on what terms and conditions they would be willing to give up to get a higher pay rise.....sweet Jesus !!

  7. Wait until our new "degreed go getters" realise that the pay scale is a lie....and that they will never reach their maximum unless they have a very brown tongue and are happy to prostitute themselves.
    The brilliant new world of the HMRC....interesting to see if slim boy Thompson has apologised,as is the Christian way,for his outburst on the intranet.
    I am one of those who has decided that the poison that is the work surface pro will never darken my home.

    1. A large percentage of new criminal investigators leave very quickly. A combination of mot getting the training they were promised, and being given no responsibility saw to that. Many left to go back to their old jobs (often with promotion!) or went to the private sector. And I don't blame any single one of them.

    5. It appears HMRC have had comments about their vile bullying culture removed from the independent 'Time to Change' website which aims to provide a platform to help those with mental ill health. How low will these people sink and just WHAT do they have to hide?

      They're an overmanaged department with a gang like mentality and still they cannot cope with a little truth slipping into the public domain in the public interest...HMRC have inflicted some pretty damaging injuries on some staff, they can run but they can't hide...we have a law based society in this country and these scumbags are not exempt...

Yep absolutely derisory, that will make people want to work for HMRC won't it, we are out of austerity now according to the government, well get your hand in your fucking pocket and pay a decent wage rise, bet Thompson will get his £20k guaranteed bonus to make up for his rise (do they negotiate separately). And they had to nerve to say they acknowledge how hard staff had worked pre Brexit, nut obviously not enough to claw back some of the years of pay freezes and below inflation rises. Fuckers, the department is on its knees and all they do is run it further into the ground. Time for PCS to step upto the mark and earn their subs, done fuck all for years.

    Continuation of ten year austerity...1% this year and the "excitement" of another 1% if you sell all your terms and conditions..... no pay progression...use of National Minimum Wage to pay lower grades...no chance of reaching you maximum band level even though HMRC are still recruiting staff advertising minimum and maximum bands...disgraceful !!
