Whither Verify?

When HMRC recently ended its support for Verify, it came as an unwelcome surprise for thousands of taxpayers facing imminent deadlines or the urgent need to apply for rebates online, when they found themselves locked out and unable to sign in to HMRC’s services.

Services you can no longer use with GOV.UK Verify

From April 2022 the following services will use their own identity verification instead of GOV.UK Verify:

Having been barred from the tax account they previously accessed using Verify, these users have found themselves unable to provide the documentation required to regain access to HMRC services online.

Unfortunately, it seems that some staff at the HMRC call centre assigned to deal with such issues don’t appear to be aware of the demise of Verify and of its implications.

Bill Mew in Accounting Web issues a cri de coeur

HMRC may learn from this experience, make allowances for those that have been inconvenienced, help those more seriously impacted and ensure that this kind of thing never happens again.
Will HMRC learn?

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. The problem is only exacerbated by the fact that the majority of HMRC staff are still working from home...though, judging by the complaints across Twitter and the press, the lazy ****s aren't doing much actual work!!!

  2. Off-topic but with the well-known issue of HMRC refusing to get out of their pyjamas and return to the office, is the ongoing problem of HMRC's toxic bullying culture just making it worse?

It's probably bad enough working from home and being bullied remotely. Speaking from experience working out on the road as part of a debt collection Field Force team, the misfits within HMRC would still find methods to bully staff. On one such occasion, an HMRC colleague tipped off his acquaintance that I would be visiting their address to collect his acquaintance's partner's debt. Yes, sadly, there seems to be a casual acceptance by HMRC of so-called 'low-level corruption' from those whose face fits.

Seriously, who want to come face to face with the bullies on a daily basis in an HMRC office? The amount of self-control required not to deal with the little cowards in a fittingly robust manner is exhausting.

Please, someone in government get a grip of HMRC!!! Start with fixing the toxic workplace culture and recruit and train staff with the integrity and skill required to deliver a decent service to taxpayers!

And an apology to past and present victims of HMRC abuse might start to repair the damage...

    1. A quick scan through HMRC staff reviews on Indeed demonstrates that bullying remains a significant problem for HMRC in 2022...

    2. Wouldn't tipping off 'customers' of an impending visit @4/5/22 20:01 breach rules like DPA and CRCA ???
Wouldn't that person be sacked ???
Dear oh dear, HMRC never fails to disappoint and does so more and more each day... Totally corrupt!!!
