HMRC Closing VAT Registration Helpline in 5 Days!

HMRC is closing its VAT registration helpline on Monday, May 22, 2023. The helpline was a subsidiary of the main VAT helpline and was dedicated specifically to helping taxpayers who had a concern around their VAT registration application. Advisers from this helpline will be redeployed to spend their entire time processing VAT registration applications instead of answering calls through the helpline.

HMRC says the decision to close the helpline was made after a review of taxpayer service offerings. The agency says it is committed to being responsive to taxpayer needs and to ensuring that its business model represents the best possible value for money for the taxpayer.

HMRC says taxpayers who have a concern around their VAT registration application can still get help by contacting the main VAT helpline on 0300 200 3701.

This is of course a load of old wank.

Agents were originally told in an email from HMRC that the service will close on 22 May 2024. As such people have been given just 5 days notice!

This is yet another example of HMRC talking bollocks wrt caring about handling taxpayer queries!

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. Punter: "Can you tell me when I'm going to get my VAT Number, the application was sent three months ago. I need to put it on my invoices, so I can get paid?"

HMRC: "HMRC is a diverse and inclusive organisation, we're actually raising awareness and celebrating Save The Hedgehog all week. Your call has been important to us. Thank You. Goodbye"..

  2. 2024 is more than 5 days!

  3. Harra said ...wait for it... 'Its a mystery'

  4. Expect a reply within 40 days. Is that 40 business days (8 weeks / 2 months) or actual days? Always best to keep it as vague as possible so you can fudge the issue when questioned.

  5. Not surprised. HMRC lose so many staff because of its toxic bullying culture.

  6. The Times has written a useful guide if the public wants to contact the department. Have all your references beforehand and remember to be nice. Although in some instances, the article states, it could be a whole YEAR before the department gets back to you. A Year .

Maybe HMRC can give Santa a laptop, headset and a script to read from just in time for Christmas. Or, if you've been a good Boy or Girl this year he'll drop your repayment off when he's climbing down your chimney. Just don't forget the mince pie.
