Computer Glitch Kills Tax Credit Claimant

Computer Kills Tax Credit Claimant
HMRC have found a neat way to reduce the amount of money paid out via tax credits. They kill people off, not physically but by wiping them from their computer records.

Carol Buchanan, a part time cleaner, found this to her cost recently when she was told at her local Post Office that she couldn't collect her working tax credit because she was dead.

Ms Buchanan was also told that no emergency credit payment could be made, because she had already been wiped off the computer system.

HMRC have yet to give her a timescale to resolve this cock up, and it is likely that she will be without her tax credit for several weeks.

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. What a great idea! She should now stop paying all her bills. Especially her TV License.

Sit back, then watch them fix that glitch and probably screw that up as well by chasing real dead people for money.

    Incompetent wierdos.

  3. It would be interesting to know the true story behind this, actually. No reference was provided, so I Googled it. One of the newspaper articles referred to a letter from her life assurers, also referring to the fact that they thought she was dead. There's no way HMRC would have told the insurers that she had died (they almost certainly wouldn't have even known who her life assurance was with). Unless it's some kind of extraordinary coincidence, one has to wonder whether either the insurer told HMRC she had died or a third-party told them both. One has to wonder whose system fault actually caused this. Trouble at the registry office, perhaps?

Incidentally, Ken, it looks like you're being plagiarised. My Google search yielded another blog that's reproduced your last two posts word-for-word within an hour! Think of all the wasted opportunities to advertise insurance!

  5. Oh what a tangled web! This doesn't surprise me because HMRC have started sending correspondence to an address we haven't used for 4 years! And when we call them to ask them to change their records do not show this address anywhere. But the next week hey presto - yes more mail to the "old" address
The new owner is getting pretty pissed off with having to forward stuff to me and must think I'm telling lies because HMRC can't be that incompetent - can they?
