The Low Incomes Tax Reform Group has called on HMRC to begin house calls, and take steps to eradicate the overpayment of tax among the elderly.
A nice idea, in theory.
However, HMRC simply do not have the resources to do this; hence the fact that local HMRC offices are closing, only to be replaced with call centres.
Tax does have to be taxing.

I work in an EC and unless the person is unable to get to the EC because of a severe disability managers have to persuade them to come in as a home visit is too expensive.
ReplyDeleteEC staff are not supposed to promote home visits to anyone even if the person has struggled in and is extremely frail or ill.
It would be something if you could get through to the bloody call centre!!
ReplyDeleteI've spent much of the last week trying to get through to the VAT helpline, where it takes over 1 minute each time for them to give you useful messages about the number you've called, legislative changes, the website address, helpfully explain that the advice will be based on the information you give them (what a radical thought!). After all that they then usually explain that they are very busy and can't take your call!!!
On 3 occasions that I did get through, they helpfully gave me another number to dial (different ones each time) where the service was much quicker and ran along the lines "why did they give you this number, we can't help you".
They are clearly striving to achieve the legendary standards of BT.
