HMRC's £100K Giveaway

Despite Stephen Hardwick's assertion that penalties are the correct way to encourage people to submit their tax returns and pay their taxes on time:

"We use penalties purely to encourage on-time filing."

It seems that others are willing to think outside of the box, and use other means to encourage on time filing and early payment of tax liabilities.

Cameron's Behavioural Insight Team have proposed that anyone who files their tax return, two months early, could have a chance at a £100,000 prize.

Let's see if this ever gets off the drawing board then!

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. If 'penalties' are NOT for 'revenue'... why not simply put all the penalties in 'the pot' and then hand those out to every good little boy and girl that complies with HMRC and Government manipulation of their subjects and share out 'the penalties pot' between all the 'good folk'? That way it wont even cost £1ook. HMRC lottery?

Sounds like social engineering to me... didn't we fight two world wars... aaarrgghhh (Cheltenham.... GCH... Q)

  2. Everyone has HMRC issues it seems! A very humorous read. Yes, tax will always be taxing, no matter how cute the tagline.

  3. I heard Cameron had had the 'lads around fro Goldman Sachs' and was taking a page out of the banking profession(?) – HMRC to divvie out the 'penalty pot' as bonuses to staff, but only at the highest level of course.

... when you come to think about it, that's exactly where it will be going, however indirectly!

(for those who can't think for themselves, 'subect' pays penalty to HMRC> HMRC to Govt coffers> Govt coffers to HMRC senior personnel pay packets/bonuses/pensions), or maybe they'll put in the MP's expenses pot for Xmas?

  4. Holy baloney Batman we are in trouble...

    GCHQ compares themselves to HMRC!

"The first thing to remember is we're a Civil Service department employing the same types of people, and bound by the same terms and working conditions as all other government departments, from HM Revenue & Customs, through to the Home Office."

    2. HMRC are out to get meeeeee!!! ARRRRRGH they are using their evil nasty powers of issuing in-date tax calculations that a taxpayer has an extremely lenient timeframe of about 4 years to disagree with. THOSE STALINISTS MUST PAY.
