  2. In the main, these people were earning very good money and then took the opportunity to pay a far lower amount of tax than has turned out to be due. The ordinary PAYE taxpayer on average wage does not have the opportunity of such spurious schemes. It is only fair to taxpayers who correctly pay their taxes that these people do the same. Bleating about it now doesn't cut any ice with the ordinary working taxpayer. Most of them will have known, or at least suspected, these schemes were too good to be true at the time. If they cannot pay it one go, HMRC should make them obtain a loan to pay it. None of these time to pay arrangements that are too long to be ever paid off. Make them pay their tax as all should. Just having a little difficulty paying what is due is no excuse.

  3. @ 13:33 well said. HMRC and the people mismanaging it are nasty scum. However paying the right amount is vital for to keep public services going. If these taxpayers were given poor advice from tax agents then litigation in that direction is surely a route to consider. As a former HMRC field force / distraint officer I was verbally abused and assaulted by members of the public in doing my bit to keep the system going. I was later attacked by scumbag HMRC staff leading to serious injury and homelessness , yes i was one of the many victims of "violent hmrc bullying". however that does not change the reality that people should pay there full and fair share within the law.
The conduct and discipline , and governance issues within hmrc are another issue which need investigation

  4. Should the current clusterfuck that is exploding around Brexit result in the UK remaining in the EU then HMRC will eventually morph into a regional tax centre for the EU, not a lot of difference really.
The resulting mess will not be a pleasant place to 'work' and if you believe things are at their worst, think again.
HMG and Parliament will become even more useless in our vassal state. Think Minions and add the tune from 'Its a Small World After All' with the cast of The Muppet Show thrown in for good measure.
    Sleep tight little one's!
