HMRC Take 5 Months To Answer Queries

The other key metric is how long is HMRC taking to refund overpaid tax?

HMRC has ceased to function!

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. In April this year I wrote to HMRC about a PAYE matter concerning the Marriage Allowance as my income is below my tax free allowance and my husband is not a high earner. My subsequent research suggests that I'm unlikely to get a response until September at the earliest. I find this unacceptable all the more so as HMRC demands swift action in respect of it's enquiries. So what's the problem? Insufficient well trained, well paid, motivated staff or an over complex tax system produced and regularly modified by government! Or have I missed something?

    1. Everyone I know in HMRC is working on the government's latest fad, furlough fraud.
It's all about 'sexy' headlines nowadays, sod the real work. And the staff have no say in what they have to do.

    2. Sadly, many companies and individuals saw Furlough not as a lifeline to help them manage over the lockdowns caused by covid, but as a cash cow to milk. Too few plaudits go out to HMRC staff for getting the payments done, even though it was obvious to them that the claims were not alltruthful. I hope that the greedy bastards that fiddled the system for their own gain are identified, named and prosecuted. And that the courts hand out appropristed sentence.
