The Government is set to delay introducing its Making Tax Digital self-assessment tax system for the self-employed and microbusiness owners until April 2026.
Previously, the Treasury was due to drag 4.2 million self-employed workers and small businesses into filing quarterly Making Tax Digital returns from April 2024.
Only in September 2021, the Treasury announced the deadline for MTD would be postponed for 12 months from April 2023 to 2024.
The reason, according to an exclusive in the Times, is that HMRC computer systems are not ready, despite Making Tax Digital being first announced in early 2015.
It is clear that HMRC is useless and not fit for purpose!
Tax does have to be taxing.

If it isn't broke, don't fix it.
ReplyDeleteSelf Assessment, despite its faults, is established as a workable system. One Tax Return, once a year. Simple.
I wouldn't be surprised if the whole thing was quietly dropped after endless face saving reviews.
HMRC are utter shit
ReplyDeleteI've just phoned to sort my tax code out by, you know, talking to a Human.
After listening to automated messages, a.i robots trying to bounce me to the online website. They asked me for personal details, again trying to nudge me off the phone by telling me what the wait times are. When I finally hung on, I thought I would at least enter a queue.
How wrong I was. All I got was "Thank You For Your Call.. Goodbye"
This happened TWICE so you're not telling me it was an accident.
HMRC need hauling before a Public Account Committee and in front of someone who can see through all the bullshittery they spout.
