Over 580,000 self-employed workers and landlords have yet to sign up for HMRC's Making Tax Digital for Income Tax scheme, despite less than a month remaining before the August 7 registration deadline.
A Freedom of Information request has revealed that of the 864,000 people required to register for the scheme by April 6 this year, only 282,637 had signed up by May 20.
The figures, obtained by international accountancy firm Azets and confirmed by HMRC, show that around two-thirds of those required to join the new digital tax system had not yet registered when the data was compiled.

ReplyDeleteThe IT system running on an elastic band and a couple of gerbils will flake if a tiny proportion of punters try and sign up on the deadline.. Much in the same way the BBC Licence Fee mass cancellation has demolished the BBC, HMRC needs punters to buy in and comply. They can send all the brown letters they want.
The Director of Communication will be getting his busy little beavers to put a PR spin on the whole thing, quietly delayed for lack of robustness or some other bullshit. Needing another decade to raise awareness by which point they'll be down the road.

ReplyDelete8 years for a Tax Investigation. Anyone would think they've got no staff, WTF do these people do all day? Maybe you should get retired or made redundant tax inspectors to do the jobs they were paid for. Higher grades now are just on the merry go round transfer gravy train to boost their careers, very few would know what a tax return looks like if they were wiping their arse on one.

When you used to post on here as 'Paul Garlick' you were always claiming that an earth-shattering scandal was about to be revealed. Result - absolutely nothing ever happened.

DeleteNothing to do with the BMW scandal? It was our investigation that uncovered that this was going on! We're grateful that a sceptical reader made an FOI and was able to verify our accurate investigation for themselves. And thank Ken for publishing the FOI on his site

DeleteThe first allegation that HMRC were using BMWs as official vehicles was made by an anonymous poster @05:45 on 15th December on the 'HMRC's Christmas Gift to Taxpayers' thread.
He made further posts @14:34 and @20:48, the content being that every Field Force Officer in the country had been allocated their own BMW. i3 and
some were using it for private purposes. He apparently knew this as he was a former Field Force Officer himself.
Subsequently I submitted a FOI request to HMRC followed by a request for an internal review to the initial reply.
On 14 April 2026 you then posted that you had been "heavily involved in unraveling and exposing the car scandal".
And yet you did not make the initial allegation and had nothing to do with either the FOI request or internal review.
So perhaps you can explain to us all what it was you actually did.
How do you say that the country is bankrupt, without saying it's bankrupt.
