Beyond Pathetic

Fail
Freelance UK reports that the Forum of Private Business (FPB) is a "tad underwhelmed" by HMRC's many faults.

The FPB is of the view that the tax system is inefficient because it is "bogged down in bureaucracy" partly a result of HMRC's "complex, unwieldy" procedures for online taxpayers.

The FPB said that the tax system was no longer "fit for purpose".

Re HMRC's failure to pick up 43% of the calls it received (2008-09), the FPB said that it was "beyond pathetic."

This is not a state of affairs that can continue. Something is going to "break"; whether it is the staff (who are taxpayers), the taxpayers (who are not staff), the politicians or indeed Excomm.

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. Never mind, there is another staff survey soon.
Perhaps a loyal reader can let ken have details about what appeared yesterday...

I think the staff broke some time ago. Its just that no one believed them until recently.

  3. I have the misfortune of working for these halfwits & as a tax payer i am shocked and disgusted by their working practices every single day. Most people wouldnt treat a dog the way they treat their staff with their overbearing corporate bullying.
I dont know anybody who wouldnt leave if they could find a job anywhere else.
And they wonder why its falling apart at the seams.
Totally unfit for purpose is a compliment to the rabble at EXCOM but its the persecuted staff at the lower grades who need helping as those in higher grades are lost in up their own arses bollocks..
A total clean out & rethink is the only way forward now the disease of incompetency and complacency is too widespread for any hope of saving anything worth saving.

  4. Everything is fine in HMRC, it must be, you can't move for propoganda telling the staff it is so.
Keep repeating the same story often enough and even the unbelievable appears true.

(only partially quoted) Dave Hartnett said yesterday "its imporatant to give you some public commitments,, on behalf of Excom, ahead of the 2011 survey, which opens in just over a month's time."
Phew, that must have been a too close for comfort call, when to print that?

    BTW HMRC will
"Use the nformation you give us to improve working life here in the department."!

    BTW HMRC won't
"Use the survey result when deciding office closures or team moves."!
"Use the data for anything other than improving working life here in HMRC."!

    Messge to managers
"Excom colleagues and I will hold ourselves and our management teams accountible for the following commitments. Any departure from them will not be tolerated by me or any other senior leader within HMRC. Furthermore I will actively support the properinvestigation of any evidence of transgressions in line with HMRC's procedures governing such matters.
It is vital that we all behave in line with these common sense principles and that we all agree to work together in this way without exception and in a way that is entirely consistent with our published leadership behaviours"!

    HMRC will not
" Feed back on the data in any inappropriate way."!

I have no heitation in praising this new approach, has the top finally woken up to the "fiefdoms" below them?

  7. Does anyone know if Hairnet is being groomed for top dog and if DLS is being jettisoned? Private Eye seem to think so.

  10. Hello Ken I worked for this organisation for 18 years, first as Contributions Agency, then as Inland Revenue and finally in 2005 as HMRC. I am a caseworker in the employer group and we basically are working as battery hens with our hands tied by ridiculous procedures with no empowerment to try to go the extra mile for the tax payer. The whole organisation is now ruled by a factory stile philosophy called "Pacesetter" or "Lean" which was pioneered by the car company Toyota in the 1940's. The only people who get on and promoted are those that embrace the new "Utopia". But with all of the safety issues regarding Toyota cars in the last few years I fear that this has been an awful mistake. I was bullied and swore at to breaking point by a manager in a room on our own. I tried to compose myself but I had to ring in sick on the following Monday. The manager was rude and aggressive to my mother on the phone. We received a visit from the police on the next Friday at 8pm because this man had claimed that I threatened him with violence which is absurd, The man in question is 6 foot 6, I am 5 foot . I will be handing in my notice this week. HMRC win awards as an employer for zero tolerance to bullying. My view is that the organisation is merely an extension of our parliament. .i.e completely corrupt bunch of lying bastards. I refer you to the great part that Bill Nighy played in the remake 3rd series of Auf Weidersehn Pet as the dodgy MP Geoffrey Grainger. I think the inspiration for that character may have been Jonathon Aitkin
