Homer's Note In The Telegraph

Lin Homer's note to staff telling them about their forthcoming redundancies, has been picked up by The Telegraph.

I wonder if Hardwick will be putting his head above the parapet again?

Oh, hang on a minute, I see that he has:
"I'm sorry to have to correct you again, Harriet.

HMRC's operating budget was £3.26 billion last year - less than a tenth of the figure you have quoted. It was reduced by 25 per cent in the 2010 Spending Review and by another five per cent in the 2013 Spending Review, although we have been given £1 billion of the savings back over four years to invest in tackling tax evasion and avoidance, fraud and error. Using those savings we secured an extra £23.9 billion in compliance revenues last year and an extra £20.7 billion the year before.
You have also compounded your innuendo of last week, by now suggesting that our CFO is leaving as a result of an "accounting glitch". This is as untrue this week as it was last week."

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. I love it when an HMRC spokesperson casts statistics around like a fisherman throws maggots as ground bait. It does tend to make one think. So, assuming the figures to be correct, first question, how much hasn't been collected, not just that ethereal figure of revenue protected, but how about revenue lost, gone for ever, stolen, evaded or simply avoided offshore, let alone cash suppressed here?
Truth is nobody knows, but many guess. If you are going to throw figures about make sure you know what your baseline is and how resilient your comparators are, otherwise it's just figures without cohesion.
It is common knowledge that in a recession, and this one has run awhile, tax takes a hit. So the next question is, how good are these results as quoted when more people are suppressing more money?
Lies, damp lies and HMRC statistics?
Or just someone making a noise?

  3. What they don't say is the truth, so whether it's lies, damp lies or HMRC statistics, then predictive text notwithstanding they are still fecking lies!

Anyone taking on the press is likely to end up with skeletal cupboard rattling, so it may be interesting to see who eventually wins the current spat?

My money would be on the press!

  4. We all know statistics come before anything else in HMRC, doesn't matter about the amount of money brought in or how staff are treated as long as the statistics are met and calculated.

Incidentally I do miss Ruth Owen's diary has she been on holiday lately, redone her hair or been to see Man City with Rolf or whatever her husband was called?

Anymore of those videos with her lisping through the achievements she has made?
