  1. Very sad news. Thoughts are with family & friends of the victims.

As a former long-serving HMRC staff member (frontline 'Debt Management' and Compliance) subjected to HMRC's violent bullying, I have no trust in how these matters will proceed based upon how I was treated and left suicidal by their misconduct.

HMRC cover-up wrong doing. Fact. They have zero integrity. Fact. There are countless corrupt/dishonest/ar*e-licking staff who will defend them and who will cover up for them in any way they see fit. Fact.

It's beyond disturbing to read that of four cases since April:
    i) In one case the "the IOPC felt it was appropriate for HMRC to conduct its own investigation"
ii) "In the other two, they returned the matter to HMRC to proceed as we consider appropriate." In other words cover-up and dismiss
iii) The fourth case was only referred to the IOPC on Tuesday and will no doubt be treated the same.

The IOPC system is clearly not fit for purpose for allowing this!! HMRC are untrustworthy monsters to their core. The only way of them ever being held accountable would be for a full independent investigation with powers to challenge HMRC staff, up to and including making them swear on oath.

  2. This is a difficult one. If people have taken their own life due to receiving a large tax bill then it is an absolute tragedy and one has huge sympathy for their families and friends. Also there are massive ethical problems regarding the implementation of laws retrospectively.
On the other hand this was a blatant scam. The people in question were receiving a good income without any intention of ever paying any tax on it as we common folk have to. I wonder if while involved in this scam they used the NHS, police etc, or sent their children to state schools.
As I say a difficult one and an absolute tragedy.
I notice that nobody seems to be questioning the deceased's tax advisors either. Well, as long as they got a nice bonus I guess it's OK.

  3. HMRC should have gone after the sellers of the schemes. Not the ordinary people who trusted their advice.

What about the people that were forced to settle?

What about the families of the victims who have committed suicide?

I believe they haven't found a replacement for Thompson yet, only Harra as an interim according to Accountancy Daily yesterday.

Nobody wants the job that's why. It's a shit hole.

  4. Let us not forget that these schemes are not completely honest and all above board. The users are tax cheats.
