PAC Hearing Into The Administration and Effectiveness of HMRC

Here is a link to a recording of yesterday's PAC hearing into the administration and effectiveness of HMRC. I would have embedded the video, but it starts playing automatically (ie visitors to this site would be greeted by the dulcet tones of Homer et al whether they liked it or not).

Guest starring Lin Homer, Chief Executive and Permanent Secretary, Ruth Owen, Director General, Personal Tax, Jim Harra, Director General, Business Tax, HM Revenue & Custom.

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. Watched 1/2 hr lost mind twice...

This woman is i/c HMRC FFS?

Birmingham CC & UKBA's losses are a real gain here then.

First impression was I began looking for Capt. Hook when I heard the oft repeated cry of Smeee...Smeee...

Homer admitted that they needed to do more forward thinking and more work in advance - indications that Pacesetter/Lean all going to plan then?

And then the absolute tops, there was Revenue protected and Revenue definiteley protected with ongoing impact..., brilliant, for an organisation that can't even get things correct when it has all the information required whether that be your tax code or your death, out comes an example of ethereal thinking par exellence - what are the Lottery numbers please HMRC?!

Issue a tax bill and thats Revenue protected, it ain;t in the bank till its in the bank though.

Nobody seems to ask them about written off debtmand what that means for the HMRC bottom line, if its written off it ain't a debt any more...

And then there was mention of wanting tax not penalties - ah hah, shades of the Hartnett days here, only now we are now treating every taxpayer the same as the overseas sharks!

Spot the poppy wearers either side of the one in the middle, sans poppy?

  2. Just based on her personal performance she is more direct and less slimy than the self-important Hartnett (not difficult), and has a far better grip on the various subjects than the late Dame Leslie.

  3. Are you describing the same person?

  4. I thought she came across as far more competent than Lesley Strathie ever did when she appeared before this committee as well. Other than a few "wobbles" which are invariable over the course of a couple of hours she seemed on top of her brief.

    1. If that is being on top of your brief, the defence claims insanity!
The late Dame Lesley Strathie was out of her depth but I am afraid that Homer continues her poor perfomance in public office as well as any that have gone before and fallen out through the ever revolving doors of HMRC.
      We agree to differ.

  5. Ken,

Front Page, The Times, "Revenue Cuts Tax Deal With Tax Evaders"

It looks as though HMRC, with or without HMT help, has shot itself in the foot and whistleblown itself.

Tax evasion on the scales referred to is incredible, and if as suggested by HMRC "the courts would not thank us for taking zillions of prosecutions ino them..." just how many is zillions FFS? Have the Muppets plucked another figure out of thin air again?
"A selective prosecution policy" FFS, we are talking more than cricket score figures here, and we are talking EVASION here, not AVOIDANCE.
Osborne says "We will be as tough on the richest who evade tax as on those who cheat on benefits". (Double Bollocks!)
Gauke is even insisting that the Government put out "strong messages about evasion" (Duhhhh!)
Then there is the anonymity issue, we should know who these EVADERS are, any in or been in any public office and just what is going on with HMRC/HMT!
