Your Country Needs You!

Despite the ongoing restructuring of HMRC, which will result in a further reduction in staff numbers by approximately 13,000, HMRC still need to take in and train younger recruits who will be the "future" of HMRC.

As such, HMRC are advertising for new recruits for its Tax Professional Development Programme.

Its advertisement describes the work as "fascinating, vital work that helps keep the UK working".

Hyperbole, or reality?

Comments from current employees very welcome!

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. If your an arse-lick, you'll do well in the department.

If you can use your loaf, simplfy procedures, question policy, be honest and try to help others then stay well away from HMRC.

They havn't invested in their staff in years.

  2. If anyone is thinking of joining HMRC I have free tickets for the titanic which might just be a better option. The rats leave this sinking ship - with pensions, knighthoods and other rewards while the crew are chained up.

  3. Can anyone add to the Private Eye story about Vodaphone being "let off" billions in tax?

  4. This recruitment campaign has caused a lot of complaints internally. In the past internal applicants just needed to get past the tests, interviews etc. Now its only open to those with a 2:1 degree.

It means that if you have the knowledge and experience to do the job you can't get onto it but if you have a 2:1 in The History of Art or Media Studies you are straight in on just under £30,000 a year.

On top of the never ending recruitment embargo this was the final nail in the coffin of progressing within the department.

  6. Oh joy - a 6 week crash course which replaces what used to be 2 years on-the-job training. That's if there's any trainers left... By the way have a look at http://www.private-eye.co.uk/sections.php?section_link=hp_sauce&

  7. This is part of the graduate recruitment campaign that is a Cabinet Office scheme that HMRC is duty bound to take part in. But that doesn't mean that it isn't absolute bollocks and craps on anybody who actually knows the business.

All they need to know is that they can work their arses off and try to get the best deal for the taxpayer before Hairball comes in and cuts a nice backroom deal and pisses on all your hard work.

Similarly there is a HR graduate program run by the Cabinet Office which gets graduates in at Hgher Officer level - circa £28 grand a year on HMRC terms - to spout absolute bollocks and bullshit bingo with a gauranteed promotion marking and free professional training with CIPD - a few more grand per year cost to boot.

All in all exactly what this country needs to bring itself out of recession...

Anyway, people survey results are released across the Civil Service on Monday with the wider release later in the week. By all accounts HMRCs results are even worse this year. But then again, so are the results across the rest of the Civil Service as well. (Anybody care to spot the ready made excuse that WILL be exploited by the top brass in that last sentence?)

  8. You need your head examined wanting to get involved with this outfit.
Some of the people I worked with, who probably had a lot to offer HMRC got out once upward progression ended. Theres like a sediment of work-shy numpties now who were kind of hidden before the more determined people left. Why have I to do this, long term sick, useless managers has crept in.
Paranoia and suspicion also in made worse with the recent administration budget cut and 13,000 to go statement.
    Happy Christmas :)

Nah. Brilliant pay, job security, do very little, get a multi million pound pension and get to retire 3 years before you're born. At least thats what I was told by people who don't work there.

Almost, except for the brilliant pay, job security, work load and pension terms.
