Working in the department, I can see that these phone calls are all wrong on so many levels. However older people could well take fright and respond, almost on auto-pilot without thinking.
ReplyDeleteI wish there was more publicity around the whole arrest thing. People need to know that you won't be arrested for not paying your tax, per se, but you might be if you don't comply with a court order. However that's up to the courts, not HMRC.
As for "breaking down your door" as someone puts it on Twitter in response to this: HMRC so rarely applies for a Break Open Warrant these days as to be, for all intents and purposes, negligible. Any decision re breaking open is usually done at Board level and it's highly unlikely your common or garden garage owner, for example, will ever have that done to them!
