HMRC Systems Crash

An outage on HMRC website blocked taxpayers from completing their tax returns in the latest of a string of delays and IT meltdowns.

Thousands of reports were made to the outage tracking website Downdetector between late morning and early afternoon on Tuesday 24 January  as an IT problem left taxpayers unable to fill in their tax return online with only a week to go before the self-assessment deadline.

HMRC said the online portal is now accessible again and it is looking into what caused the temporary outage.

A spokesman for HMRC said

“Our Self Assessment online service is working well. It was temporarily unavailable for some customers for about an hour, but this has now been resolved. We are sorry to those who were affected.”

Tax does have to be taxing.

  2. The bullshittery is endless. 27 minutes? I'd say it was closer to 27 hours. I've phoned a few times in the last couple of weeks when it was just cut off.

Jimmy should be hauled in to the PAC for this. The Royal Mail chief has just been bounced back for the answers he supplied. He should get the same treatment.
