RTI Scuttlebutt

My thanks to a loyal reader who has given me the heads up concerning some scuttlebutt about RTI.

Allegedly, HMRC has incorrectly doubled the salary (as per RTI records) of an unknown number of employees (in comparison to their actual salaries as per their P60's), and sent demands out to a number of taxpayers telling them that they have underpaid their tax.

My loyal reader also advises me that HMRC are aware of this, and have admitted as such over the phone to a number of his staff.

Please can someone advise if this is just a one off aberration, or if there are a number of people/companies affected by this?

Tax does have to be taxing.

  1. Assuming The Muppet Show had received the P60 details this example would seem to indicate no check back from tax demanded as underpaid, which assumes some forms of calculations to get to that stage, to tax declared per RTI.

WTF is going on in there, it should be a relatively simple programme with a simple check along the lines of 'customer' (LOL) declares X, therefore, if calculations are correct then X tax due, if unpaid, then X tax demanded, NOT 2 x's X!

  2. you are talking about getting the BASICS right. most staff cant be bothered anymore, they've had the stuffing kicked out of them by years of incompetent management, useless IT systems, and lack of support. Too much stick and no carrot. I feel sorry for everyone who has to endure this purely to make a living.

  3. A friend of mine who gave them well over a months notice before leaving then received another paycheck in his account, lol.
But once they realised their mistake they hounded him to death threatening legal action if it wasn't returned.
    Its the Muppet Show allright.

  4. yeah the horror version! there's nothing funny about this LONG RUNNING show.
it's even more depressing when no improvement is forthcoming and the tax payer is funding this fiasco. I don't blame the 'shop floor' management and politicians have allowed this department to get out of control. mark my words, there will be mass walk outs and strikes once the work force deems enough is enough.

  5. There won't be anything of the sort, most of the staff are too frightened to do anything and the PCS is concentrating it's resource on keeping people in jobs (ROFL).
As for shop floor management, double bollocking, useless, fail to stick up for staff and ignore H&S issues daily, pathetic pond dwellers. The few that have ability and moral fibre are pushing water uphill.
Been there, seen it, stood up for self and colleagues, thankfully left the bloody place. Life is much better on the outside, put principles before pounds, if you can.
It will take something really tragic to get this debacle in the open.

  6. think it's time the Health & Safety Executive were invited in to carry out an audit!
Hmm, wait a minute, are they impartial and independent?
Maybe a mass produced letter out lining the issues and anyone that agrees with its contents sends it to Number 10 Downing Street (without signature) we don't want them victimised do we?
